The National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune, is the joint services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services—the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force—train together before proceeding to their respective service academies. Eligibility for Female Candidates
Pursuant to landmark Supreme Court directives, female candidates are fully eligible to apply for all wings (Army, Navy, Air Force) of the National Defence Academy under identical academic, entrance syllabus, and SSB interview standards. Specific physical and height benchmarks are tailored for female candidates (minimum height of 152 cm, with relaxation for Gorkhas and North-Eastern candidates).
Marital Status & Age Calculation Specifics
- Unmarried Status: Only unmarried male and female candidates are eligible. Candidates must undertake not to marry until they complete their full training at the Academy. A candidate who marries subsequent to the date of application, even if successful in the written exam or SSB, will not be selected.
- Age Calculation: Candidates must strictly fall between 16.5 and 19.5 years on the course commencement date. No category age relaxation (OBC/SC/ST) exists for the armed forces officer entry.
Physical & Medical Fitness Standards
1. Height & Weight: Minimum acceptable height for Army/Navy is 157 cm (152 cm for females). For Air Force Flying Branch, minimum height is 162.5 cm with specific leg length (min 99 cm, max 120 cm), thigh length (max 64 cm), and sitting height (min 81.5 cm, max 96 cm).
2. Visual Standards: Uncorrected vision of 6/6, 6/9 for Army; Air Force Flying Branch requires 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other, correctable to 6/6 with hypermetropia not exceeding +2.0 D Sph. Refractive surgery (LASIK/PRK) is permitted only under strict age and cornea thickness restrictions.
Stages in the NDA Selection Process
- Written Examination (900 Marks): Mathematics (300 Marks, 120 questions) and General Ability Test - GAT (600 Marks, 150 questions covering English, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Events).
- SSB Interview (900 Marks): 5-day evaluation at Services Selection Board covering Stage 1 (Screening: OIR and PPDT) and Stage 2 (Psychological tests, GTO outdoor tasks, Personal Interview, and Conference).
- Medical Examination: Thorough multi-day assessment at armed forces service hospitals covering ENT, dental, ophthalmic, surgical, and medical parameters.
Common Disqualifications in NDA
1. Tattoos: Permanent body tattoos are strictly prohibited except on the inner face of the forearm or tribal tattoos adhering to tribal customs.
2. Overweight/Underweight: Candidates must fall within 10% of the prescribed armed forces height-to-weight chart.
3. Ear Wax & DNS: Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS) and impacted ear wax frequently cause temporary medical rejection. Correct these minor issues before reporting to medicals.
